Madarosis describes loss of eyelashes, eyebrows or both. It is a clinical sign rather than a single disease. Causes include alopecia areata, over-plucking, eczema, blepharitis, thyroid disease, infection, scarring skin disease, trauma and some medications. Because eyebrow and eyelash loss has a broad differential diagnosis, the surrounding skin, eyelid margin and scalp should be assessed. Treatment depends on the cause; cosmetic camouflage, microblading or prostaglandin analogues may be considered in selected situations.
