Hair Loss Conditions

Menopause hair loss

Hair thinning around or after menopause, often involving female pattern hair loss or increased shedding.

Menopause hair loss is not one single diagnosis. Falling oestrogen levels, ageing, genetics, medications and medical conditions can all contribute. Many women notice reduced hair density over the central scalp, a wider parting or thinner ponytail, which may represent female pattern hair loss. Sudden shedding around menopause can also be telogen effluvium. Assessment is useful because treatment depends on whether the issue is progressive miniaturisation, temporary shedding, nutritional deficiency, thyroid disease or a scarring alopecia.
