SALT score

The Severity of Alopecia Tool score estimates the percentage of scalp hair loss in alopecia areata.

SALT stands for Severity of Alopecia Tool. It is mainly used in alopecia areata to quantify how much scalp hair is missing. A SALT score of 0 means no scalp hair loss; 100 means complete scalp hair loss. It is useful in clinical trials and specialist decision-making because it gives a more objective measure than a general description such as “mild” or “severe”. Many modern alopecia areata trials use thresholds such as SALT 50 or greater to define severe disease, though eligibility for treatment still depends on formal guidance and clinical judgement.
