A five-point photographic scale for grading female pattern hair loss by midline part width.
The Sinclair scale grades female pattern hair loss by assessing the midline part. It is often useful because many women first notice a widening parting rather than bald patches. A higher Sinclair grade reflects more visible scalp through the part and reduced central density. The scale is practical for photographs, follow-up and patient communication. However, it is still a visual tool, so lighting, hair length, colour contrast and styling can change the appearance. Objective measures such as trichoscopy or phototrichogram may be helpful when monitoring treatment response.
