Diffuse shedding or thinning associated with an underactive or overactive thyroid.
Thyroid disease can disturb the hair cycle and cause diffuse shedding across the scalp. Both hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism may be associated with hair thinning, dry or brittle hair, or increased shedding. Thyroid disease can also coexist with alopecia areata because both can involve autoimmune tendencies. When symptoms such as fatigue, weight change, heat or cold intolerance, menstrual change or palpitations occur alongside hair loss, thyroid function testing is commonly considered by clinicians.
