Biotin for hair loss

Biotin can help true biotin deficiency, but it is not proven to treat ordinary pattern hair loss.

Biotin is heavily marketed for hair and nails. It can reverse hair problems caused by genuine biotin deficiency, but true deficiency is uncommon outside specific situations such as inherited enzyme disorders, severe malnutrition, some medication effects, prolonged raw egg-white intake, bariatric or bowel disease, and some pregnancy-related states. The evidence does not support routine biotin for androgenetic alopecia or female pattern hair loss when biotin levels are normal. A sensible glossary page should be clear: biotin is not a substitute for diagnosing the real cause of hair loss.
