Dithranol (anthralin)

A topical irritant sometimes used to stimulate regrowth in alopecia areata.

Dithranol, also known as anthralin, is a topical treatment traditionally used in psoriasis and sometimes used in alopecia areata. It deliberately irritates the skin, which may alter local immune activity and encourage regrowth in some people. It can stain skin, hair, clothing and surfaces, and irritation can be troublesome. It is not a first-choice treatment for everyone and availability can vary. It is best thought of as a specialist option rather than a general hair growth cream.
