Topical corticosteroids

Steroid creams, lotions, gels or foams applied to inflammatory hair loss areas.

Topical corticosteroids are used in several inflammatory scalp conditions, including alopecia areata and some scarring alopecias. They reduce inflammation around follicles. In alopecia areata, they may be tried for patches, especially when injections are unsuitable, although response varies. In scarring alopecia, they may help control symptoms and inflammation but cannot regrow hair where follicles have been destroyed. Long-term or strong steroid use can thin the skin, so treatment should be supervised.
