A scalp-applied hair growth stimulant used for male and female pattern hair loss.
Topical minoxidil is one of the main evidence-based treatments for pattern hair loss. It is applied to the scalp, not the hair, and can help prolong the growth phase and improve hair calibre in some users. It does not work for everyone, and results usually take at least six months to judge. Benefits are maintained only while treatment continues. Side effects may include scalp dryness, irritation, itching, unwanted facial hair from spread, and early shedding. It is most useful when follicles are still present, not where scarring has destroyed them.
